The Physics of Binaural Beats

Binaural beats are an auditory illusion perceived when two different pure-tone sine waves, both with frequencies lower than 1500 Hz, with less than a 40 Hz difference between them, are presented to a listener dichotically (one through each ear).

If you play a 200Hz tone in the left ear and a 203Hz tone in the right ear, the brain's superior olivary nucleus attempts to integrate the two signals, resulting in a perceived beat frequency of exactly 3Hz (the difference). 3Hz falls squarely in the Delta wave range.
